KHEJRI TREE
Stamp Issue Date : 05/06/1988Postage Stamp Dinomination : 0.60Postal Stamp Serial Number : 1319Postal Stamp Name : KHEJRI TREE
Stamp Information : KHEJRI TREE The Khejri, (Prosopis Cineraria), is a small to moderate sized tree, evergreen or nearby so, with lighter foliage and rather slender branches armed with conical spines, found in dry and arid regions of India. It does not ordinarily exceed a height of 12m, and a girth of 1.2m, the maximum recorded being 18m and 5.4 m, respectively. The tree prefers a dry climate and the most important areas of its distribution are characterised by extremes in temprature. In Punjab it occurs throughout the alluvial plains (rainfall 10-25cms). The tree is a light demander and the older plants are drought resistant. Young seedlings are sensitive to frost. Natural regeneration through seed is confined to moist places, nut in dry situations the tree regenerates itself by root suckers. The seed weight is 25000 a kg. and seeds need sacrification and soaking in water before sowing. Germination percentage is about 65.
About one year old nursery plants are planted in the field. Artificial regeneration through direct sowing on lands either subject to occasional floods or under irrigation has been found to be quite successful. The trees can also be successfully raised by sowing in conjunction with field crops in irrigated lands. The wood is suitable for interior construction work, such as columns, roofs, doors and windows and for wheels and hubs of carts, agricultural implements, tool handles, small turnery articles and well curbs. In dry and arid regions, it is a source of fuel and is used for making charcoal. The pods are used as fodder for livestock. The bark as well as galls formed onleaves are used for tanning. Leaves are lopped for fodder. The tree exudes a gum that resembles the mesquite gum. The Khejri tree has been traditionally protected by the Bishnois of Rajasthan, a remarkable phenomenon in the field of conservation, both of vegetation and soil. The Khejri tree is appropriately being used as a theme for this stamp to be released on 5th June, 1988, World Environment Day, by the Department of Posts. Stamp Information : RANI DURGAWATI Rani Durgawati was the daughter of Raja Salivahan of Rath and Mahoba, a scion of the Chandela dynasty. She married Dalpat Shah, the ruler of Gondwana. He died in 1548 A.D. leaving a minor son and Durgawati took over the reins of Government. From 1548 to 1564 A.D. she governed the country assisted by two ministers, Adhar Kayastha and Man Brahman. It is said that trade flourished during this period. Peole were prosperious. Like her husband's predecessors she extended her teritory and accomplished the political unification of Gondwana, also called Garha-Katanga, with courage, enerosity and tact. Out of 23,000 villages in her kingdom 12,000 were directly managed by her government. Her large well equpped army is said to have consisted of 20,000 cavalry and 1,000 war elephants besides a good number of foot soldiers. Durgawati combined beauty and grace with courage and wisdom. She distinguished herself as a warrior and fought with unvarying success against Baz Bahadur, the Sultan of Malwa. Stories of her exploits as a warrior and hunter are still curent in area. She carried out many useful public works in different parts of her kingdom, winning the hearts of her people. She built a great reservoir close to Jabalpur, called Ranital. Following her initiative one of her attendants built Cherital and the Adhartal was built three miles from Jabalpur by her minister Adhar Kayastha. She is also reputed to have been a liberal patron of learning.s Her kingdom fell a victim to agression as the Mughal Empire spread. Asaf Khan, the Governor of Kara-Manikpur attacked her domains, lured by tales of wealth and hoping for rich teritorial gains.
Befriending the people and encouraging trade betwen Gondwana and his own territory, he apointed spies to assess the Rani's military streangth, before embarkig on conquest. Assisted by jagirdars of neighbouring regions the army of Asaf Khan penetrated into Gondwana in 1564 catching Durgawati off her guard. She gallantly opposed the invaders but resolved that it was beter to die gloriously than to live with ignominy. She travelled through dense forests arriving at Narhi which was strategically positioned and naturally fortified. Despite initial success her army was severely weakened and beaten back. Her young son was injured and she herself, struck by arrows in the right temple and in the neck, fell unconscious. When she regained consciousness she found that the battle had been lost. It is said she stabbed herself choosing death to dishonour. She was cremated some 12 miles from Jabalpur. Text, Courtesy: Dr. R.K. Sharma, Jabalpur.

Stamp Information : Acharya Shanti Dev Acharya Shanti Dev, Sanskrit poet and the author of 'Bodhicharyavatar' a classic of Mahayana Buddhism was born in 687 A.D. in the royal family of Gujarat. His father was king Kushala Varman and mother Vajrayogini. On his father's dath Shanti Dev, who was then known as Shanti Varman, became heir to the throne. But a few days before his coronation, Bodhisatva Manjushri appeared before him in a dream and beckoned him to follow the path of Dharma. On waking up, Shanti Dev left the place quietly. After travelling for 21 days, he reached Nalanda and studied the Buddhist scriptures, mastering Sanskrit and Pali. It is said that he started writing poems in Sanskrit. The scholars i the University challenged him to write philosophical work in verse. Shanti Dev's reply was the 'Bodhicharyavatar', his masterpiece, which describes the various stages in the life of a Bodhisatva, who need not necessarily be a monk or even a celibate. The esential quality to develop is the Bodhichitta, the Mind of Enlightenment, which has a single goal - to enter the stream and become a Spiritual Son of the Buddha/ The sorrows of this world become blessings in the spiritual path. Translated into major world language, 'Bodhicharyavatar' is recited daily by millions of monks and laymen, professing Mahayana Buddhism in the Himalayan border states of India rom Ladakh and H.P. in north-West to Arunachal Pradesh in the North-East, as also in Magolia and China. The Bodhicharyavatar in 10 Chapters containing 913 verses achieves a unique quality of perfection both as Sanskrit poetry and as a philosophical treatise, elucidating the Madhyamika system of Buddhist philosophy, whose chief exponent was the celebrated Acharya Nagarjuna. 'Siksha Samuchaya' weaves over one hundred Sutras around 27 verses and is a complementary work to 'Bodhicharyavatar'.
It is said that Shanti Dev defeated many scholars of eminence in debates and composed other works, namely, 'Shiksha amuchaya', a compedium of Mahayana Snskrit Sutras in Sanskrit, and 'Sutra Samuchaya'. Not only was he a great saint and scholar, he was also a great benefactor of the poor and the lowely, and an apostile of peace and goodwill. At the time of a famine in Gujarat, he is said to have worked as a social worker and provided food to thousands of starving persons. On another occasion, h intrvened to prevent a bloody quarell between to factions. He is said to have realised and deckared fs "Everything is like space". He passed away at the age of 78. Y.S.PARMAR
Stamp Issue Date : 04/08/1988Postage Stamp Dinomination : 0.60Postal Stamp Serial Number : 1324Postal Stamp Name : DR. Y.S. PAMAR
Stamp Information : Dr. Y.S. Parmar As an architect of modern Himachal Pradesh, the name of Dr. YAshwant Singh Parmar shall always remain associated with it. Dr. Y.S. Parmar, the energetic Chief Minister and the beloved leader of Himachal Pradesh, was born on 4th August, 1906 at Chanhalag vollage of the erstwhile princely state of Sirmaur. To Dr. Parmar goes the credit of integrating a number of hill states having similargeographical and cultural identities and then sucessfully procuring for the whole the status of a fullfledged state. By doing so he ensured the future prosperity and development of this backward area.
The most commendable part of it is that he achieved it without any revolt and without a single drop of blood beinh shed. This could be done because of his preservence, his devotion to serve the masses and his intellectual attainments. Dr, Parmar remained the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh for about eighteen years. He had a deep understanding of life in the hills, the geographical circumstances and cultural ingredia\ents of that area. On this basis he was able to formulate various schemes in consonance with the imperatives of the hills and thereby, initiate a new awareness in the life. Prior to independence, the life of a person from the hills ws normally associated with the abcence of education and with poverty, unemployment and helplessness. This was informed by this crusader of the hill people, people who now call themselves 'Paharis' with an inherent feeling of self-respect, the seed of which was sown by Dr. Parmar. The personality of Dr. Parmar was a harmonious conglomeration of various facets. A farmer, a horticulturist, a judious administrator, a mass leader and an intellectual. He was devoted to the masses throughout his life and was responsible for an awakening amongst the hill people. Dr. Parmar, a servant of society, is remembered with affection and respect not only in Himachal Pradesh but all through the hills and in fact the whole country. He passed away on 2nd May, 1981 but left an indelible mark in the history of Himachal Pradesh.

Stamp Information : FREEDOM FORTY- SWARAJ 15 August, 1988 brings to a close the commemoration of 40 years of India's Independence. TO mark theis ocasion the Department of Posts id issuing a stamp commemorating the contribution og Bal Gangadhar TIlak, towards the cause of freedom and his famous call "Swaraj is my birthright" which inspired generations of Indians. At around the beginning of this century there was a certain disenchanment with the approach of the older and more moderate group of nationalists. The Patition of Bengal in 1905 catalysed the wave that carried our National Movement to its phase with its emphasis on Swaraj, Swadeshi and Boycott. Tilak's thundering proclamation onSwaraj and the cries of "Vande Mataram" rekindled national pride. For the first time the common man boldly stepped out in the current of our National Movement. The youth of India rsponded enthusiastically to the call of independence from foreign rule.
The charged mood of the timess was later summed up by Jawaharlal Nahru, who wrote in his Autobiography- ..." For the first time since the Revolt of 1857 India was showing fight and not submitting tamely to foreign rule- Almost without an exception we were Tilakites....". On the economic front the emphasis on Swadeshi proved to be a boon; cottage industry prospered and large-scale enterprises were also set up. Tilak spread the message of self-confidence and self-reliance. He helped to widen the social base of our National Movement. Upon the death of this great son of India, in 1920, Mahatma Gandhi wrote ".... The roar of the lion is hushed. For us he will go down to the generations yet unborn as a member of modern India....". His bravery, his simplicity, his wonderful industry and his love of his country inspire us even today. Stamp Information : Durgadas Rathore Durgadas Rathore, the son of a Rajput noble of Marwar, Askaran Rathore, was born on 13th August 1638 at Salwa. He led a quiet, uneventful life with his mother in village Lunawa near Sawla Kalan. But in 1655 he killed the official hardsman who loked after the king's camels for speaking insolently about the king. This act of loyalty changed the course of his life. Aurangzeb became the Emperor of Hindustan and, gaining the loyalty of Jaswant Singh I, ruler of Marwar, appointed him Governor of Kabul. Durgadas served Jaswant Singh throughout his life-time and after his death, in 1678, he shouldeered the task of safeguarding the freedom of Marwar and his life of its young king, Ajit Singh, son of Jaswant Singh.
The task was not an easy one, beset as he was with court intrigues and faced with the might of Mughal Emperor. Battles, skirmishes and diplomatic manouvers kept Durgadas busy till 1708, when he restored Ajit Singh, to the throne of Marwar. His soldiers were men of various castes and creeds. His zeal roused the fervour of many Rajputs bringing them togather under one flag in an unprecedented manner. His chivalry towards women was well known, as is seen from his protection of Aurangzeb's grand daughter. On 22nd November 1718, on the banks of the Sipra at Ujjain, Durgadas passed away. In 1964 the Government of India conferred the title of 'Padmavibhushan' on him. He was a rare combination not only of uncommon erudition but also of singular Yogic experience. To him knowledge stood for 'Para Vidya' (Supreme Knowledge) which has no other objective than the realisation of Ultimate Reality. Universal salvation is, according to him, the ultimate goal towards which the entire creation has been moving. He died on 12th June, 1976 at Varanasi. text Courtesy: Mahamahopadhyaya Pandit Gopinath Kaviraj Birth Centenary celebration Committee.

Stamp Information : HINDI DAY On attainment of freedon in 1947, it was natural that the Indian Government sought an alternative to English as the Official Language and as a medium for education. It was essential to ahve a link language to establish emotional integration within the nation. After deep consideration, both within and outide the Constituent Assembly, on 14th September, 1949 it was agreed, among other items, to adopt Hindi in the Devanagari script as the Official Language of the Union. Accordingly on 26th January, 1950, when the Indian Constitution came into force, provision was made for this under Article 343 (i). Thus today India celebrates Hindi Day on 14th September. It was provided under Article 345 that the States within the Union may by law adopt any one or more of the languages in use in the State or Hindi as their Official Language.
The Official Language Act 1963 was passed to protect the sentiments and interests of the non-Hindi speaking States and their residents, accordingly these States will continue to correspond with the Centre in English till Hindi is adopted by a State for the purpose. Gujarat, Maharashtra and Punjab have adopted Hindi as Language for correspondence with the Centre under these provisions. Central Government offices will continue to cerespond with non-Hindi speaking States and their residents in English as before. The interests of Non-Hindi speaking candidates have also been fully protected in the matter of recruitment to srvices under the Centre. The Constitution has entrusted the Centre with the task of development of the Hindi Language. The Government of India has been making constant efforts to achieve this so as to ensure that the language becomes a medium for expressing all elements of the composite culture of our country. Consequently Hindi has been adopting and assimilating forms, styles and expressions from the regional languages as also from Sanskrit, to mould itself into a truly national language.
Mechanical facilities play an important role in promoting the spread and development of language. The facility for use of Hindi in computres and other modern equipment is also being gradually increased. The Department of Posts is pleased to issue a postage stamp in honour of Hindi Day with the hope that Hindi will continue to fulfil its historic role as the Oficial Language of the Union and as the link language of our large country.
